Nigerian Army kills 3 female suicide bombers

Nigerian troops on Monday evening shot and killed three female suicide bombers who attempted an attack on an Internally Displaced Peoples (IDP) camp in Mungono town, the army has reported.

A statement on the army’s website read; ‘‘Today at about 6.15am, 3 female Boko Haram terrorists suicide bombers attempted to attack innocent Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) fetching water at a borehole located about 3 kilometres, outskirt of Monguno town along Marte road.’‘

“Our vigilant troops detected and gunned them down, killing both instantly.”

‘‘Unfortunately, the explosive they were strapped with exploded and injured 2 civilians nearby. The injured persons have been evacuated and are receiving medical attention at the 8 Task Force Division’s medical facility,’‘ the statement added.

The army added that the third attacker’s bomb detonated some distance before troops deployment along the same road at about 7.10am. The army subsequently said it had ‘‘cordoned off the general area and imposed restriction of movement into Monguno while they the general area and make it safe.’‘

The army is in charge of security in most parts of the restive Borno State, which was the main base of Boko Haram terrorists who until recently had hoisted their flags in most Local Government Areas in the state.

The terrorists who the Army insists have been restricted to the Sambisa forest occasionally send young female suicide bombers to inflict harm on soft civilian populations.

They have since the assumption of office of President Buhari, being on the back foot with a sustained counterinsurgency by the Nigerian Army pushing them back and restricting their audacious forays in the past.

The six year old insurgency by Boko Haram has already resulted in the displacement of more than two million people across the Lake Chad region comprising Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger and Chad.

In the third quarter of 2015, the Nigerian military launched Operation Zaman Lafiya Dole, and followed this up at the end of April with Operation Crackdown, intended as a final onslaught against Boko Haram in its Sambisa Forest base.
